Metal Roofing (Part-II)

Metal siding, corrugated metal roofing, standing seam metal roofing

In our previous article Metal Roofing Part-I we discussed about advantages of metal roofing. Now we will discuss some issues related with the installation of metal roof. First of all, assess your self and check whether you are able to do the installation or you need the services of a professional. A professional can do the job in a better way and complete the work in less time. You will have to pay for his services. On the other hand, if you want to save money and want to do it your self, you will have to spend some extra time. Here is a list of the tools that you require for metal roofing:
• Stepladder with extension
• Good quality measuring tape
• A box of chalks, preferably colored
• An electric drill machine
• Set of Iron bits and wooden bits
• Hammer, preferably heavy-duty
• Large scissors for metal sheet cutting
• Wearable cloth bag for nails and screws
• Screws and nails of appropriate size and quantity
You may get all this material and tools from the hardware shop in your area.
Installation Instructions
Take out the measuring tape and measure the height of your roof. Add projection height approximately 3 or 4 inches in it. Measure length and height on either side. You can guess the amount of metal edging easily now. You can use slope factor method or roof top method for measuring your roof. Do not forget to include 3-6 inches more for sufficient airflow between the layers.
For residential buildings two types of metal roofing are suitable.
• R-panel metal roofing
• V-crimp roofing
V-crimp roofing is simple to install. Lap screws are not required in this type of roofing.
You must remove the old shingles with roofing shovel from the roof before starting the installation of the new metal roof. You may also have to use pitchfork for tearing the merged shingles. Spread roofing felt or tarpaper for making a base for the new roof. Slat board may also be used as a base if there is only one layer of shingles. Slat boards are 1by 4 inches in size and are often made of pine wood. These can be fixed lengthwise over the old roofing by using 3” screws.
Now the base for metal roofing is ready. Install the metal edging around the whole roof’s perimeter using nails of appropriate size. You should call somebody for your help if the sheets are lengthier. The metal roofing sheets less than 12 feet can easily be carried on to the roof by leaning them against the side of walls and pulling up.
You must be much careful while installing metal roofs on the too steep buildings or on the difficult to walk roofs as it can be very dangerous to handle heavy metal roofing sheets there.
