You may find such a house nearby you that is under construction. Its four
walls have been completed and owner is thinking of various roof styles.
He will be trying to choose one that may suit his budget and still his
house may look number one in the locality. Every house owner has this
thinking. The roof of house gives protection to us from heat, cold, rains
and hailstorms. This also adds to beauty of our house if it is built with
proper style and material.
The selection of roof style may depend on weather conditions in your area,
your geographic location or on architectural design of your house. There
are various styles of roofs available. You may choose one according to
your requirements. Let us analyse some roof styles here:
The least expensive roof you will find is flat roof. It is also easy to
build this type of roof using a few materials. It is built keeping one
side slightly low for drainage of rain water or snowfall from it. This
roof style is not considered suitable for the areas of heavy rains and
snowfall.
The second type of roof you will find is pitched roof, triangular in shape
and resembling with English alphabet ‘A’. This type of roof is also known
as gable roof. You will see this roof style on most of the houses in USA
and Europe. These may be with a steep slope or gradual slope. It depends
on the weather conditions of the location. These may run off rain and
snow easily. These roofing styles provide extra space that can be used
for extra rooms in the house. You should be careful while installing this
roof style on your house. Strong winds may blow of them if not properly
installed.
Similar to gable roof or pitched roof is salt box roof. Only difference
is that its two sides are not built same size. These are sloped at some
different angles. If the two parts of the gable roof are crossed it is
known as cross gable roof. Hipped roofs may be a best choice for the areas
with more wind and rain intensity. These are sloped upward from its all
sides and are capable of easy drainage of rain and snow. Hipped roofs
also provide more roof space on your house. Its two parts may also be
crossed.
You must have seen the sheds. This is a simple one sided roof, set at
angle to the earth. If you have tight budget and still want a shelter,
you may think of shed. These roofs are capable of providing you a lot
of sunlight. But you will be slightly protected from the rains and winds.
You must also have seen pyramid style roof that forms shape of a pyramid
on the roof of your house. Similarly a bell shaped roof is also available
for you and this is known as gambrel.
